“1 Must 5 Reduce” Technique Helps Farmers To Grow Rice Better

1 MUST: Certified or original rice varieties must be selected to ensure the quality of rice development and growth

5 REDUCE:

→ Reduce the amount of rice seed: Use the right amount to avoid waste and have enough area for the plants to grow best.

→ Reduce fertilizer: Use specialized fertilizer for rice of Viet Nga to avoid waste and ensure adequate nutrition for the best rice growth.

→ Reduce pesticides: Limit the use of pesticides (apply the “avoiding planthoppers” sowing method and limit the use of pesticides by planting flowering grasses on the field banks to attract natural enemies. Choose flowers with the right color and scent, lots of nectar, and pollen to attract natural enemies because most mature stages need that to replenish energy. These flowers must be easy to grow, don’t need much care, and can bloom all year. The flowers are planted in advance on the edge of the field so that when rice seed is planted, there are already flowers around to attract pests. Some flowers are suitable for this method: Sai dat (Wedilia chinensis), Xuyen chi (Bidens pilosa), Cuc got (Colobogyne sp.), and Co cut heo (Agelatum conyzoides). 

→ Reduce irrigation water: Save the cost of pumping water into the field, avoiding diseases that spread in the water.

→ Reduce post-harvest losses by applying mechanized harvesting at the proper maturity.
