Experts\u2019 Forecasts on Drought and Salinity for the 2023\u20132024 Season<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vietnga.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/vietnga.vn-cong-chong-han-man.jpg\" alt=\"Anti-salinity sluice gate\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" title=\"\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">[Anti-salinity sluice gate in Kien Giang Province.<br \/>Source: Vietnam News Agency]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the drought and salinity intrusion in 2024 is expected to be as severe as in 2016.<br \/>This is due to the low flood peak in 2023, which was lower than in 2022, and the total <a href=\"https:\/\/vietnga.vn\/ba-con-nong-dan-mien-tay-da-ung-pho-nang-han-the-nao\/\">dry-season water flow is forecast<\/a> to be 20\u201325% below the multi-year average. <\/p>\n<p>One of the main causes is the Tonle Sap Lake (Cambodia) water level, which is currently about one meter lower than the long-term average, combined with the strong impact of the El Ni\u00f1o phenomenon.<br \/>Experts predict that dry and hot conditions will persist until April 2024, with high intensity, worsening the freshwater shortage across the Mekong Delta region. <\/p>\n<p>This means that drought and salinity intrusion are expected to arrive earlier and be more intense than in previous years.<br \/>Typically, during the dry season, salinity intrusion lasts for about three months; however, in years with insufficient rainfall, it can extend up to six months.  <\/p>\n<p>For example, during the Winter\u2013Spring crop of 2020, the prolonged drought and record-high salinity levels caused significant crop losses for many farmers across the Mekong Delta.<br \/>In reality, proper preparedness can greatly reduce the extent of damage.<br \/>During the 2020 drought, although the salinity levels were at a historic peak, thanks to experience and preventive measures, the affected rice-growing area was four times smaller compared to 2016. <\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Preparedness_Measures_of_Farmers_in_the_Mekong_Delta_Against_Drought_and_Salinity\"><\/span><strong>2.
