Durian Harvest is Bountiful, Prices are High, Farmers Earn Billions of Vietnamese Dong Per Hectare
According to the General Statistics Office, in the first six months of 2024, durian production increased by 20.3% compared to the same period last year. After deducting expenses, farmers earned a profit of approximately 1 billion VND per hectare of harvested durian.

According to data from the General Statistics Office, fruit production in the first six months of the year was quite good, including: durian reaching 487.7 thousand tons, an increase of 20.3% compared to the same period last year; guava reaching 201.4 thousand tons, an increase of 5.9%; jackfruit 405.8 thousand tons, an increase of 4.2%; passion fruit 79.4 thousand tons, an increase of 3.5%; longan reaching 199.6 thousand tons, an increase of 102.9%; oranges reaching 519.4 thousand tons, an increase of 2.4%; mangoes and bananas both increased by 2.3% compared to the same period last year…
The selling prices of most fruit products increased, averaging a 6.12% increase in the first six months of the year compared to the same period last year. Specifically, the prices of oranges, tangerines, and citrus fruits increased by 5.03%; and the prices of longan, lychee, and rambutan increased by 8.98%. The total export value of fruits and vegetables in the first six months of 2024 reached US$3.43 billion, an increase of 28.2% compared to the same period.
According to Mr. Dau Ngoc Hung, Director of the Department of Agricultural, Forestry and Fisheries Statistics: “Unlike the previous situation where ‘bumper harvests often lead to low prices,’ in the first six months of this year, many key agricultural products have enjoyed both ‘bumper harvests’ and ‘high prices,’ contributing to increased agricultural product value and producers’ income.”
In particular, durian production has increased sharply this year (20.3%) and the price is quite high.
Durian is fetching a good price
In Tien Giang, starting from the end of March 2024, which is the main harvest season, durian purchased directly from the orchards has already reached prices of 140,000 – 215,000 VND/kg. Mongthong variety ranges from 200,000 – 230,000 VND/kg, while Ri6 variety is priced from 130,000 – 145,000 VND/kg (an increase of about 30,000 VND compared to the beginning of March 2023), representing the highest increase ever recorded.
By mid-May, the selling price of Monthong durian remained at 100,000 – 110,000 VND/kg, while Ri6 durian was priced at 60,000 – 70,000 VND/kg (10,000-15,000 VND/kg higher than the same period last year).
According to Department Head Dau Ngoc Hung, “At this price, after deducting expenses, farmers can earn a profit of about one billion VND per hectare of durian.”
