China Purchased 1.5 Million Tons of Durian in 10 Months
According to the Chinese Customs Administration, in the first 10 months of 2024, China imported approximately 1.5 million tons of durian, worth nearly $6.68 billion, an increase of 10% in volume and 4.4% in value compared to the same period in 2023.
This import volume exceeded last year’s total, demonstrating the strong consumer demand in the Chinese market, which accounted for 91% of global durian consumption in 2023.
Thailand continues to hold the position of the largest supplier of durian to China, but is facing increasing competition from Southeast Asian countries, especially Vietnam.
To maintain its position, Thailand focuses on improving product quality, strictly controlling export standards, and addressing issues such as soft durian or pest infestations. In addition, Thailand is innovating durian varieties to better suit the tastes of Chinese consumers.
The China-Laos railway also plays a crucial role in reducing transportation costs and time, helping to enhance the competitiveness of Thai durian. However, in the context of a market showing signs of saturation, innovation and adaptability are key factors for exporters to maintain their position in the market.
