Dong Thap is a province in the southwestern part of Vietnam, renowned for its lotus production and export. In recent years, lotus exports from Dong Thap have become a highlight of the province’s agricultural sector, generating significant revenue for the local economy.

The mayor is a promising lotus exporter

On May 7th, Dong Thap province announced the export of its first 15 tons of frozen lotus roots to the Japanese market. It is expected that in 2024, Dai Viet Lotus Food Joint Stock Company will export approximately 8 containers of lotus roots to its Japanese partner, with a total order value of nearly 7 billion VND.

The company is also working with partners in South Korea to prepare for exporting lotus-based products to that country.

Besides fresh and processed lotus seeds, the company also develops fresh and processed lotus root products for both domestic and export markets.

With the advantages and benefits that lotus brings, the locality is leveraging the strengths of lotus cultivation in combination with agricultural production and tourism development linked to lotus. As a result, lotus production is no longer limited to selling fresh lotus, but is gradually shifting towards processing and manufacturing to enhance the value of the lotus plant.

Lotus is a distinctive product and a brand of Dong Thap province. The highest concentration of lotus cultivation is in the districts of Thap Muoi, Cao Lanh, Chau Thanh, Tan Hong, and Tam Nong. Notably, Thap Muoi accounts for over 30% of the province’s lotus cultivation area. According to statistics, in 2023, lotus farmers in the province earned an average profit of over 28 million VND per hectare.

Currently, Dong Thap has more than 40 establishments producing and trading food products from lotus; 56 OCOP products made from lotus; and 4 lotus products certified to use the “Made in Dong Thap” trademark.

According to lotus processing businesses in Dong Thap, market signals for this product are very positive, especially in the international market. Many businesses are expanding their raw material areas and improving their products to meet domestic and international demands.
