Coconut exports to China are increasing.
After being granted permission to export coconuts officially to China in August 2024, many Vietnamese businesses have signed contracts to supply tens to thousands of containers of fresh coconuts.
Vietnam currently has approximately 200,000 hectares of coconut plantations, with one-third of the area meeting US and European organic standards, creating a significant advantage for exports. The Vietnam Coconut Association anticipates fresh coconut exports to China reaching $250 million this year, accounting for 25% of the total export value of the entire industry.
Besides fresh coconuts, China also favors processed coconut products such as coconut milk, coconut cream, and coconut jelly. According to nutrition experts, coconut jelly is rich in fiber, aids digestion, and is good for cardiovascular health.
In the first nine months of the year, Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports reached nearly $5.7 billion, a 34% increase compared to the same period last year, equaling the total for the entire year. Thanks to official exports to China and the US, the total export value for the year could exceed $7 billion, far surpassing the set target. Regarding coconuts specifically, the Coconut Association forecasts that export revenue for this commodity and processed products could reach $1.2 billion this year if the export process proceeds smoothly.
Despite numerous opportunities, Vietnamese businesses still have to compete with Thailand and ensure product quality, strictly adhering to China’s quarantine regulations.
