Dong Thap Province Increases Summer-Autumn Rice Yield by Over 300 kg/Hectare Thanks to Application of Technological Advancements

Date 21/06/2024

In the 2024 Summer-Autumn rice crop season, Dong Thap province harvested over 52,220 hectares out of a total of more than 186,460 hectares planted, with an average yield of 72 quintals/hectare, an increase of more than 3 quintals/hectare compared to the same period in 2023.

Summer-autumn rice crop yields high productivity.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Vu Minh, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dong Thap province, the production cost of summer-autumn rice ranges from 3,458 to 3,667 VND/kg, with profits ranging from 26.2 to 32.1 million VND/ha, an increase of 3.4 to 9.1 million VND/ha compared to the same period last year.

To achieve high yields in the summer-autumn rice crop, it’s all thanks to farmers applying good technical solutions right from the start of the season, such as: 3 reductions and 3 increases, 1 must and 5 reductions, burying fertilizer at a ratio of 50-100% DAP + 50% Potassium before the final tillage, integrated crop management (IPHM), rational water management, organic fertilizers, etc., which help the rice grow and develop well, minimize the occurrence and damage of pests and diseases, contribute to saving production costs, and create safe products.

At the same time, Dong Thap province is forming large-scale production areas linked to consumption through cooperatives and production groups to promote sustainable production.

Mr. Nguyen Van Vu Minh added that many models for reducing rice production costs have been implemented, such as: sparse sowing and burying fertilizer in the soil during the final land preparation before sowing, IPM in pest management, etc. The area applied for the Summer-Autumn 2024 crop reached nearly 101,300 hectares.

The model helps farmers save costs, reduce cultivation expenses, and achieve efficient production in the Summer-Autumn crop season. The area applying reduced seed usage in the Summer-Autumn 2024 crop season reached 99,547 hectares; the area using certified seeds in the Summer-Autumn 2024 crop season reached 130,983 hectares.

Project to cultivate 1 million hectares of high-quality rice

For the 2024 Summer-Autumn rice crop, Dong Thap province implemented the “Sustainable Development Project for One Million Hectares of High-Quality, Low-Emission Rice Cultivation Associated with Green Growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030” with an area of 20,000 hectares.

The province also implemented a rice production model according to SRP standards at the Thang Loi, Dong Thanh, Truong Phat, and Hung Thanh cooperatives. Accordingly, cooperative members were guided on 41 SRP rice production criteria and required them to keep production logs. The Thang Loi and Dong Thanh cooperatives also implemented an alternating wet and dry (AWP) model by placing water level sensors to monitor water levels. This model yielded over 65 quintals/hectare and generated profits of 25-30 million VND/hectare.

For the 2024 Summer-Autumn rice crop, farmers in Dong Thap province focused on product quality, promoted the application of mechanization, facilitated the shift of labor out of agriculture, and most importantly, farmers gradually transitioned from agricultural production to agricultural economics.
