Vietnam is the largest tea supplier to China in terms of volume.

According to statistics from the Chinese Customs Administration, China’s tea imports (HS 0902) in the first eight months of 2024 reached 35.06 thousand tons, valued at US$100.83 million, a sharp increase of 38.8% in volume and 9.4% in value compared to the same period in 2023.

Specifically, green tea imports increased sharply by 106% in volume and 61.8% in value, reaching 7.4 thousand tons, worth 11.88 million USD; black tea imports reached 27.66 thousand tons, worth 88.96 million USD, an increase of 27.7% in volume and 4.8% in value.

Notably, tea imports from Vietnam to China increased sharply by more than six times compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 8.43 thousand tons. This propelled Vietnam past many markets such as Sri Lanka, India, Myanmar, Burundi, and Taiwan to become the leading tea supplier to China in the first eight months of 2024, accounting for 24.1% of total tea imports into China, a significant increase compared to 5.2% in the same period of 2023.

However, in terms of value, Vietnam ranks only second, reaching $12.24 million, accounting for 12.1% of the total, much lower than the 39.6% of the largest supplier market, Sri Lanka.

Besides Vietnam, in the first eight months of 2024, China also increased tea imports from many other markets such as Kenya (up 345.1% in volume and 212% in value), Uganda (up 16.4% and 62.3%), Argentina (up 122.2% and 92.7%), etc.
