The Effectiveness of Viet Nga Specialized Fertilizers in Adverse Stormy Weather
Date
In the last days of July, thousands of hectares of Summer–Autumn rice in the Mekong Delta suffered lodging and waterlogging, making harvesting difficult, due to the heavy rains brought by Typhoon Talim. According to Tuoi Tre newspaper, in Hau Giang province alone, 2,616 hectares suffered 10–20% damage, 250 hectares suffered 40–60% damage and 92 hectares suffered 80–90% damage. Of the Autumn–Winter rice area already sown, 728 hectares were flooded at levels of 15–90%.
Rice lodging caused by storms not only makes harvesting difficult but also reduces farmers’ yields. Apart from harsh weather and soil conditions, plants lodge because of weak stems, poorly developed roots and lower leaves that have not been fully shed.
The technical team of Viet Nga Fertilizer made field observations in Hong Ngu City, Dong Thap province, on the lodging situation of rice fields there. Farmer Tran Van Ho, who had taken part in a Viet Nga Fertilizer demonstration model, shared his comparison of the effectiveness of Viet Nga specialized fertilizers versus straight fertilizers mixed by hand in the traditional way.
