Fresh coconuts will be officially exported to China
On August 19, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam and the General Administration of Customs of China signed a Protocol on phytosanitary requirements for fresh coconuts exported from Vietnam to China.
Earlier this week, three products – fresh coconuts, frozen durian, and crocodiles – received good news when a protocol paving the way for official export to China was signed.
With the opening of the massive Chinese market, Vietnam’s fresh coconut exports are expected to increase by an additional $200-$300 million in 2024 and continue to grow strongly in subsequent years.
Currently, China consumes a huge amount of coconuts, while domestic supply only accounts for 10%. Therefore, when China opens its market to Vietnamese coconuts, it will be an opportunity for localities, especially in the Mekong Delta such as Tra Vinh and Ben Tre.
Currently, coconut-growing localities are making great efforts to improve product quality. To facilitate coconut exports to China, many businesses have invested in building organic coconut farms. Ben Tre province alone has more than 7,000 hectares of coconut plantations that have received this certification. In 2024, the coconut industry aims to export coconuts and coconut products worth over 1 billion USD.
