Vietnamese Passion Fruit Prepares for Export to the US Market

The Departments of Agriculture of both the United States and Vietnam have moved on to implementing the legal procedures to allow the export of Vietnamese passion fruit to the US market.

During his visit to the United States, on August 27, 2024, Deputy Minister Hoang Trung and the delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development held a working meeting with Deputy Secretary Hafemeister and representatives from relevant agencies of the US Department of Agriculture.

The trip aimed to discuss opening up markets for certain types of fruit in which Vietnam has an export advantage; strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the field of plant protection; and promote technical cooperation and investment in sustainable agricultural production and emission reduction.

Accordingly, in discussions with US Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Hafemeister, the two sides agreed on the technical requirements for passion fruit, moving on to legal procedures to allow the import of passion fruit from Vietnam.

After reaching a technical agreement, the U.S. Department of Agriculture will conduct a consultation process with relevant agencies within 60 days, after which it will officially announce that Vietnamese passion fruit is permitted for export to the United States.

In addition, both sides initiated the review process for new Vietnamese products, including seedless lemons, guavas, and jackfruit.

Currently, Vietnam exports eight types of fresh fruit to the US market: dragon fruit, mango, longan, lychee, rambutan, star apple, pomelo, and coconut. In the first six months of this year, fruit and vegetable exports to the US reached nearly $150 million, a 32.4% increase compared to the same period last year. The US is currently Vietnam’s largest importer of agricultural, forestry, and aquatic products.
